Yes, if the alternative has no stated rating. "Sun shirt" is a marketing description; UPF 50 is a measured result and blocks around 98% of UV. Compared with UPF 30 at about 96.7%, UPF 50 lets roughly 40% less UV reach the skin, which matters over a full day rather than an hour. For crews outdoors from morning to late afternoon, choose UPF 50. For shorter or intermittent exposure, UPF 30 is a reasonable floor.

Do UV protection shirts lose their effectiveness after washing?

It depends on how the protection was built in. When the rating comes from tight fabric construction, it holds up through normal laundering, and slight shrinkage can even close the knit a little. When UV protection relies partly on an applied finish, its effectiveness may decrease over repeated washing depending on the garment and treatment. Either type loses effectiveness once the fabric thins, stretches out or starts looking translucent against light. Replace shirts at that point rather than at a fixed date.

Are long sleeve UV shirts better for outdoor work?

Yes, for most outdoor jobs. Forearms and the backs of the hands take some of the heaviest exposure for anyone holding tools, a wheel or controls all day, and those are the areas sunscreen gets rubbed off first. A long sleeve covers them without needing reapplication. The exception is work around rotating machinery, where loose sleeves are a safety issue and a closer-fitting sleeve or a different solution is the right call.
